Explain how representations in music videos are chosen to promote the artist(s).
Most artists today promote themselves effectively by using representations in their music videos. It is common that pop artists to feature expensive objects/possessions in their music videos which shows off their wealth. It is also likely that artist use attractive men and women to promote the artist(s) as this will attract more viewers/audience and appeal to their target audience. The females un the music videos usually wear little clothing but the men are usually fully clothed which is part of the male gaze. The music videos for Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack and Titanium by David Guetta and Sia don't have these stereotypical things that are usually in music videos, they have promoted themselves in a different way.
In the video for Unfinished Sympathy the artists are promoted as 'normal', down to earth people that have a past/background with street life. The artists don't stand out from the other people in their music video which implies that they are just like everyone else. This promotes the artists in a good way as it tells the audience that they don't look down on anyone that is different to them and they are genuine people. The artists in this video are also promoted as loving people that are close to their families and care about them a lot which is shown near the start of the video when Daddy G and his son are shown holding hands, walking down the street together. The audience also see, in the video, Daddy G take a leaflet from a women advertising something in the streets which promotes him and the other artists are caring and genuine people. Share Nelson is the vocalist in the music video for Unfinished Sympathy and she promoted as the main feature in the video as she leads the video. Share is promoted as a strong, powerful, independent women as she is confident in the way she walks the streets and uses bold facial expressions throughout the video. This makes in attractive to the audience as they could aspire to be like her. She is also represented as a dominate women as she is at the front of the video for the entire thing and everyone else, including the band members, are in the background; therefore she is promoted as empowering over the band members and all the other people in the streets.
The music video for Titanium, the artists are also promoted in a positive way but also sort of negatively, even-though they are not in the video. In the video the audience see two people jogging in the street who are overweight which promotes the artists in a good way as there could have used to skinny people or attractive people jogging which would be stereotypical to see but they didn't do this. This promotes the artists as not discriminating against people so would attract more people as it makes them out to be down to earth. However, there is a contrast to this as the police and the people in the school in the video are seen to be discriminating against the boy with supernatural powers which contradicts the other point just made as the artists are promoted as discriminating against people that are different here. The song name promoted the artists in a positive way as titanium is a very strong metal so promotes the artists as strong figure which would make it appeal more to the audience. The video is about helping someone that is being bullied which promotes the artists as understanding, down to earth and caring people.
Overall, both of the videos do mainly promote their artists in a positive way and also different to most other music videos. This is because they don't show any money, girls wearing little clothing, instead it shows them to be very down to earth people and care a lot and they aren't just all about money and showing off to people. This makes these artists unique and different to a lot of other artists which would make them more popular and appeal to more people.
